As the Lok Sabha elections 2024 draw closer, the Congress party has made a pivotal decision to withdraw Supriya Shrinate, the head of its social media department, from the electoral fray. This move comes in the wake of a contentious tweet by Shrinate targeting actor-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut, sparking a storm of controversy and drawing sharp criticism.

Shrinate, who had previously contested the Maharajganj seat in Uttar Pradesh in the 2019 polls, found herself excluded from the Congress party’s eight-list for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. In her place, the Congress has fielded Virendra Chaudhary as its candidate from Maharajganj.

The controversy surrounding Shrinate erupted over a now-deleted social media post directed at Kangana Ranaut, who is contesting as a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from Mandi. The alleged offensive comment attributed to Shrinate drew strong condemnation, prompting her to clarify that a parody account misusing her name was responsible for the post.

Kangana Ranaut expressed her hurt over the incident, emphasizing the importance of dignity for women irrespective of their profession. She underscored her dismay over being referred to as ‘Mandi,’ a term associated with reverence and spiritual significance in the region.

The incident has not gone unnoticed by BJP leaders, who have criticized both the Congress party and Shrinate for the controversial post. In response, Congress leader Sandeep Dixit condemned the language used in the tweet, affirming that there is no place for such remarks.

In a further development, the Election Commission (EC) has issued show-cause notices to Supriya Shrinate, citing a violation of the Model Code of Conduct. Shrinate has been instructed to respond to the notices by March 29 evening, indicating the seriousness with which the EC views such infractions during the electoral process.

The fallout from this episode underscores the heightened tensions and sensitivities surrounding the political discourse ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. The incident serves as a reminder of the ethical responsibilities and accountability expected from political representatives and parties as they engage in campaigning and communication strategies.
